I work with quilling (paper filigree) to create liturgical and secular art. Gold leaf accents many of my pieces, along with gouache and collage. I do all of my own matting and framing. Decorative painting and marbleizing paper are other skills I enjoy, as well as surface gilding.

East Passage

A marker stone in Jamestown, RI. 23k loose leaf on Rolco Artisan size. The wind off the ocean was non-stop - I had to sit in my car to cut the leaf.

Sing Unto Him

This is a verse from Psalm 23 is beside a cut-paper harp covered with 23k gold. The scrolls and flowers are quilled, and the vines edged with 23k gold. Italian paper in a Florentine pattern covers the double mat.

Ecclesiastes

The Hebrew letters say "To every thing there is a season, and a time to every purpose under heaven". I edged quilling paper with 23k gold for the letters. The four seasons circle around the phases of the moon and the sun and stars, all made with quilling paper. The backgound is hand-sponged gouache.

Michael Kramer is the founder and president of The Gilders’ Studio, Inc., an award winning firm with prestigious projects across the United States and overseas. Formed in 1985, the studio works on monumental sculpture, state capitols, government and commercial buildings as well as churches and private residences. Several of the Studio’s more notable commissions include the Great Cupola of the Church of the Holy Sepulcher in Jerusalem, Lincoln Tomb Historic Site, the Library of Congress, the Georgia State Capitol, Faneuil Hall and the Old State House in Boston as well as gilding conservation in the Washington Monument. Listed in Who’s Who in American Art, Michael is a member of AIC and the APT. Since 1987 he has taught gilding and decorative painting at the Smithsonian, for the Society of Gilders and other venues. He has also written several articles on gilding and related fields, which have been published in Traditional Building Magazine and other periodicals. Orange County Performing Arts Center, Costa Mesa, CA

Church of the Holy Sepulchre, Jerusalem
