Toning is the patination of gilded objects to create an antique appearance or a particular type of finish appropriate to the art work. Peter Miller and Michael Gilbert have their own approach to making an antique patina, both methods will be taught. Distressing a newly gilded surface and the proper use of asphaltum will be discussed. Other finishes such as a chemical patina for silver leaf, and a vermeil finish will be taught. Methods of cracking finishes and gilding, scrafitto and granitto will also be covered. Class price includes all materials.
Each student must bring, Gilding tools: pad, knife, tip, brushes, apron, saftety glasses, samples of toning experiments (if any), and one 14” x 14” or larger gilded and burnished frame without protective coatings. *Please wrap frame in tissue paper, then in bubble wrap, dings or wear from travel will not be a problem.
