In this hands-on workshop students will learn a “solid gilt edge", that is, gilding the page edges of a book edge after all of the pages are bound together. Students will have the chance to do gauffering on their edges, which is impressing brass tools into the edge. Other types of edge gilding will be discussed, including gilding before sewing as well as hiding a watercolor painting underneath a gilt edge which is revealed when the pages are fanned out. No previous experience necessary.
Materials included: Text blocks for gilding (bound), XX double gold, sand paper, talc, bole, beeswax, silicon release paper, lighter fluid, cotton pads.
